bad dream. is a Advanced difficulty level created by Umbra. It is the second level of the art story., and features Atropos as a boss.

Layout

Opening

Black bullets rise up from the bottom of the screen slowly. The background flashes between black and gray, only making the bullets visible when it flashes. Red eyes and hands appear, and a searchlight-like triangle appears in the background while the flashing continues. The section end with it growing to cover the entire screen.

Checkpoint 1

Walls close in on the top, left, and right sides of the screen. As the screen starts to scroll downwards, the scrolling occasionally stops as a flash in the background reveals more dark obstacles. This is eventually replaced with another searchlight-like shape that moves left and right. The screen continuously scrolls down, forcing the player to navigate the dark maze with its both stationary and moving obstacles. The checkpoint ends as the walls on the sides close in towards the light.

Checkpoint 2

art.
- Text, bad dream.

The screen slowly fades back into view from black, and large attacks begin to fall from the top of the screen. The screen continues to flash between black and grey as the large squares fall, this time more rapidly. The attacks are joined by larger helpers that also fall but do not damage or warn.

After this, the scene changes to a white background with multicolored squares on the left and right sides. Atropos comes into view, floating in the center of the screen. As she begins to open her eye, the background flashes black as a pair of red hands is briefly visible. She suddenly opens her eye as she quickly looks around and the background rapidly flashes.

Checkpoint 3

Atropos begins to dash around the screen rapidly as it flashes. She first covers the right side, then dashes through the center and attacks the left. Atropos follows this with numerous diagonal dashes, followed by dashes in a rotating and then zigzag pattern. The checkpoint is finished with dashes covering most of the screen from the bottom up.

Checkpoint 4

Atropos moves across the top and sends out a cluster of bullets, before dashing across and creating bullet explosions. This checkpoint also has various laser attacks appearing, as well as giant red bullets that fall downwards. These attacks repeat rapidly until Atropos appears in the screen and disappears in a flash of red. The level’s special thanks then show as it ends.

Trivia

  • ol666 is credited for helping with Atropos’ movement.
  • The level features another special thanks to brutalist architecture, like the previous level that's art. This time, it also jokingly calls out Scribblyhoots for “slandering” it.
  • Umbra considers this level a “spiritual entry” to the 2020.2 “shadows” level contest, with it sharing the contest’s theme.[1]
