- The Mask, Lavender Town Haunting

The Masks are a ghost species that haunt Spirit Mountain. They are shown as the main antagonists of the Spirit Mountain collection by Subnautix and first appeared in Lavender Town Haunting. Masks are difficult to defeat and exist in great numbers across the entire mountain.

History

The first encounter with a Mask was in Lavender Town Haunting. Hal accidentally encounters one while climbing at night, going ahead of the sleeping Lagunn. The mask scans Hal, and then attacks them without hesitation once finished. Hal ends up losing this monster and runs into Lagunn, who fights against the Mask to protect Hal - the mask's main target. The Mask runs off after the fight - probably to alert his peers.[1]

Description

Appearance

The first Mask to appear has a circular, slightly elongated, and gray, body. They wear a pale mask on their face with a disturbing grinning face is scrawled on it. They also have circular hands that turn red when they use their powers. On two occasions in Lavender Town Haunting, the Mask loses control - revealing a more monstrous form beneath the mask. Their body becomes way bigger and shapeless, totally black, and the mask is replaced with a nightmarish red face.[1]

Worth noting is that other Masks have yet to appear and that they may be different than the first.[2]

Personality

Masks seem to be unable to speak and have unclear motivations. They use sign language to communicate.[2]

Trivia

  • The design of the Mask was inspired by the Lost Spirit from Everhood and the Kodamas from Princess Mononoke by Hayao Miyazaki.[2]
  • The bodies of the Masks are constantly burning, as Lagunn burnt his hand when he tackled one to the ground at the end of Lavender Town Haunting.
  • Masks may be linked together by a hivemind for communication amongst each other.[2]
