Description
Are you willing enough to face the Mayonnaise Maze?
Many (somewhat familiar) Secrets await you in every turn within it.

Maze of Mayonnaise is a level created by Aurora. It is their submission to the 2021.1 level contest, with the “no boss” theme. It takes place within the titular maze, with several scrolling parts, traps, and various small references to the Project Arrhythmia community.

Start

The editor's starter object pops up in the middle of the screen, moves to the side, and then up as the vignette slowly clears out.

The screen then zooms out as the level slowly advances to the right, as indicated by the two arrows, sending flying triangles from the right to the left and squares that slowly creep upwards to the beat.

A warning sign appears in the middle with two bar warnings beside it. Soon, a huge triangle shoots downward and brings the two bars beside it down whilst leaving a trail of bullets that fly left and right.

The level continues advancing, except there are now horizontal orange beams that replace the squares at the bottom. Soon, three bars shoot from the bottom, then the screen moves upwards, forcing the player through three rows of hollow squares while spikes bop to the beat at the bottom. The player must also deal with a set of bullets that fly upwards.

Checkpoint 1

One out of three possible mazes spawns in around the player, giving the instructions to move to the yellow squares that spawn in at the four corners of the maze within the time limit set by the clock in the middle. They must also avoid the small orange squares that spawn randomly

After reaching the fourth yellow square, lasers start coming from the top left and right, shooting downward along with several more orange squares randomly spawning.

A final yellow square appears in the middle. The player must reach it or else they will take damage from the walls closing in.

Checkpoint 2

Four shapes appear on each corner of the screen, sending a variety of different shape themed attacks in this order;

  • Triangle - Spawns in the middle and rotates with three wide lasers while pulsing bullets.
  • Circle - Rolls horizontally from the bottom, then the middle, then the top, while bombs explode from the top and bottom.
  • Square - The Screen is divided into a grid and flashes various patterns while lasers shoot down from the top.
  • Hexagon - A line of Hexagons will form in the middle while a larger one pulses from the center. They will then temporarily spin together.

After this, several bombs will explode from the top and bottom of the screen as many orange squares pop out until the next checkpoint.

Checkpoint 3

The screen will move to the right again, forcing the player to go through "Maze 2.0". A sort of mini obstacle course where the player must dash through various moving squares, bars, and a rolling hexagon as fast as possible before it is crushed by a massive white block.

The White block moves aside to reveal a podium with a chest labeled "Mayonnaise". Several bricks fall from the ceiling to the beat as the chest lid shakes and the vignette increases.

Checkpoint 4

The lock of the chest breaks off and the Mayonnaise jar rises up, giving the player a custom achievement called "Mayo Mastermind"

A Spiked ball falls from the left side of the screen and rolls to the right. The screen also moves to the right as lasers rotate counterclockwise from the spiked ball. There are also several bricks that fall from the ceiling as the pursuit continues and until the ball falls down.

Checkpoint 5

A maze spawns back in around the player along with the return of the Hexagon and Square. Bricks fall from the ceiling to the beat.

The Hexagon lines spawn vertically and horizontally, moving 180 degrees while the Square continuously bashes into the borders of the maze, going clockwise.

A hallway opens up on the right side of the maze and the screen moves to the right again as the maze starts collapsing. The Player must run through the hallway as the Triangles spawn behind them and the Circle rolls through the hallway. There are also a few bars that spawn in at random intervals until the player reaches the end where the top of the hallway falls onto the triangles.

Checkpoint 6

After a brief flash, the background switches to an outside view as the player is now seemingly out of the Maze. The Music chimes out as the credits appear, with the screen eventually fading to white.

Trivia

  • In the first version of the level's credits Drawer is actually mentioned twice, as both Drawer and Aratonati. This was later corrected with lemonkari replacing Drawer’s name.
Easter Eggs and References

  • The main background resembles the Heart Locket's background from Surface Tension.
  • The Triangle that shoots downward features the ">:D" face.
  • "Focus tbh" is a reference to the text "Focus" often being thrown in levels at small breaks before attacks, such as in Rear Pint, Mayhem by The Overlord, and Sonic Blaster.
  • The lasers that shoot downward from the top of the screen are a reference to the ones in Aleph-0 by TNTz.
  • When the walls close in on the final yellow square, the words "Peppa pig Jigsaw Puzzle" are briefly visible on the bottom.
  • The effects on the circle attacks as they roll are a reference to Peer Gunt, where Bond rolls in a similar manner.
  • The "Seduce" face briefly shows in the middle of the circle attack.
  • The Hexagon attack is a nod to Just Shapes and Beats' Spectra.
  • "Coca Cola Espuma time-" briefly shows up and fades away on one of the Maze's walls.
  • "LEADER" is written on the first brick that falls during the second Maze phase, a reference to Ench in Enchart's Peer Gynt.
  • The Square's movement is a nod to Nowo's attack in Opia where it hits the borders of the screen.
