Start

The Synthwave Trials is an entirely experimental procedure. It has not been tested completely and may have unpredictable results when engaged. By starting the Trials, you acknowledge that <ERROR> is not responsible for any harm to person or property that results. Proceed with caution.
- Warning, Excelsus

The opening features a short animation with added sound effects. A prompt to load the trial appears, along with a warning. The player selects the option to begin, as the levels begin loading quickly before the first one begins in a flash.

Checkpoint 1

A circular arena appears around the screen in the first section. While it spins around, triangle bullets appear in sets of three that move out from where they start as a pulse. A warning appears in the center with a triangle - its place is then taken by a three-part spinner with a pulsing triangle in the center. As the spinner rotates, bullets appear on the left and right of the screen in groups of two before moving across.

Checkpoint 2

In a flash, a giant rotating triangle wall appears as an arena. Triangle bullets appear on its edges and accelerate across while lasers appear at angles from the center. Arrow warnings appear to signal the next attack - the triangle arena is replaced with two walls on the edges and one on the bottom as the screen scrolls upwards. Triangle bullets dash across the screen from left to right, while more rain down from the screen above as the camera ascends.

With another flash of the screen, the walls disappear. The final section of the level has triangle pulses appearing, while hexagon bombs explode into bullets from the sides. A single message appears on the screen before the end screen shows up:

Trivia

  • Although it is the first level of the collection, Excelsus was finished second. The Emerald Electric was finished before it.
  • This song fitting the synthwave theme is debatable - although it is tagged as synthwave music on Newgrounds (the reasoning for its inclusion), it has a tempo outside of what is often used in the genre.
  • This is DXL44’s second shortest non-joke level, being only about 20 seconds longer than the minute-long Space Battle.
