Tell the town to pepare. Nobody crossed the town today, and nobody will chase them.
- The Conductor, Press Start - Smooth Jazz

The Conductor, whose real name is Whitney Fieberton,[1] is the fourth ghost encountered in the Spirit Mountain collection. Appearing in Press Start - Smooth Jazz, he welcomes Hal and shows them around town, before helping them escape a growing threat.

History

The start of the level goes really quiet, with Lagunn and Hal entering a seemingly desert and dark town. The Conductor breaks the silence by putting the vinyl record of the song in a gramophone. Quickly left behind by Lagunn who decides to go to the market, Hal encounters again the Conductor singing and playing saxophone among dancing citizens. The Conductor then leads him towards an hotel, when suddenly comes accross a bounty representing Lagunn and Hal. Loosing his benevolent attitude, he questions our two heroes that take fright and try to escape, before being forced to listen by its CHARM superiority. At the end, he can be seen leading Hal and Lagunn to an emergency exit, before turning back and facing towards something at the end of the road, before all the lights go out.

Description

Appearance

The Conductor is a dark orange circle with orange, glowing eyes. His white hair resembles that of old-time conductors, and his large moustache is neatly trimmed. He has two rectangular hands, and holds a baton in one of them. Additionally, The Conductor is slightly bigger than Lagunn. His gaze is constantly blasé and unimpressed, as if he's been through so much that nothing ever surprises him anymore.[2]

Personality

The Conductor is a complex soul that, given his casualness in evoking the millennia, must have persisted for a very long time in the afterlife. He's the mayor of the city of Riverdome since long enough for people to trust him fully, and rely on him when things go wrong. Besides working for the well-being and fulfillment of his citizens, he harbors an unrivalled resentment towards the entity responsible for his misfortunes. Melancholy and sadness seem to overtake him for a moment when Hal mentions his will to climb to the Summit, opening the door to various clues about his past.[2]

Abilities

The Conductor's abilities in combat are merely unknown, since he never tried to attack anyone in Press Start - Smooth Jazz. It must have something to do with his wand, that seems to be able to fly by itself and shoot sonic projectiles.[2]

Role

Being the mayor of Riverdome, the Conductor a Chief, a caste attributed to landowners and ghosts with political power. His power remains very strong on his terrain, and decreases with distance. He is however not entitled to act in a sacred place, and thus unable to command ghosts like Waterfall.
